Centering Your Photo Subject

Central (centered) photography is a separate story to which we will devote ourselves to a bit later. Centered photographs can be excellent, however, that doesn’t have to mean they are always good. Instead of persistently centering the object and, always, putting it in the middle of your photograph – rather place it on a side.

If you move the object of interest to one side, and the background is unfocused, the photo will get much more interesting atmosphere. It’s recommended the background behind the object is thematically connected to “the story”. For example, when photographing on the beach let the sand and the sea/ocean be your background…Don't forget the importance of lighting also.

When photographing in the mountains let the woods, a nice view, waterfall or something alike be your background. If, on the other hand, you’re photographing children let the bunch of coloured toys or other children be your background or, perhaps, a Christmas tree if photographing a child opening a present. With such approach you are giving your photograph enhanced charm and that’s the way to complete 'the story' you’ve started.
